Harley Set to Roar into India!

A
merican cult bike brand Harley Davidson might finally come to India. With the government easing the import of all bikes with 800cc plus engine size, other big bikes can now look forward to burning their rubber on our roads. The Director General of Foreign Trade has allowed their import into India provided, they have been tested and approved (read homologated) by any certified agency from the European Union. Earlier, the policy stated that the bikes needed to be homologated only in their “country of origin”. This meant that all 800cc plus bikes needed to be tested and then approved in the country they were manufactured in, to be treated roadworthy in India.

Many bike makers including Harley Davidson had been lobbying with the government to get the homologation norms relaxed, which they were finding difficult to meet. This new development is an encouragement to all two-wheeler majors out there to introduce their full range of high-powered bikes in India.

Yamaha Motor India has already taken the lead by launching two super bikes in the Indian Bike Market, namely the sexy 998cc YZF R1 and torque king 1680cc MT01. Not to sit idle, plans are afoot in the Suzuki camp to introduce their legendary superbike, the Hayabusa and the monstrous B-King streetbike, sometime during this year! Their launch is to be aided by Suzuki’s homologation certificates from Netherlands.

Another bike major on the radar screen is Triumph from UK, promising to entice the Indian biker with their planned launches of cruisers and sport bikes. To name a few, bikes like the modern classic 865cc Bonneville, 2300cc giant Rocket III, and the 675cc Street Triple and Daytona sports bike will be making their way to our roads by this year end.

Looking at ground realities, relaxation of the homologation policy may still not be enough for bike manufacturers to see big sales in India. So a request from the majors has gone to the government to reduce the current 110% duty that their bikes attract, to become more competitive in the Indian Bike Market.

All we now have to do is wait and watch if the government tows their line and reduces the import duty. At the end of the day this still does not guise the good news that all bike fanatics have looked forward to for so long.
