The Karma Riders are no strangers to long distance cycle expeditions as they have already pedalled an equal distance across their home country of Germany before leaving for India.
The expedition which is going to cover the states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur was flagged off in Guwahati, Assam on the 13th of September by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). This is an immense bridge building effort, not only among the different communities but also with the rest of the world. On the 19th of October, the Germans will ride a total distance of 60kms through the city of Guwahati, Assam, wherein they will be joined by thousands of local riders. The Karma Riders will also ride through Udalguri, Darrang and Sonitpur in Assam which only a few weeks ago were conflict zones soaked in the blood of people slaughtered by two warring religions.
The young Germans are being treated as celebrities and very rightly so, and have sparked off a massive interest in the cause of harmony and peace among the people of the region. They will be joined by thousands of local riders as they cycle their way through the five different states. The expedition is set to bring the North-Eastern part of India closer to the rest of the world and generate interest among people as the Karma Riders plan to send pictures and video footage to Germany on a regular basis. The young Germans are also vehement advocates of education and the nurturing of deprived children and the expedition will also look to mobilize resources for this cause.
Organised by the Don Bosco Society of the North-East in collaboration with Childaid Network of Germany, the expedition will culminate in Imphal, Manipur on the 6th of December. |
